Construction underway on New Jersey's first freestanding cancer hospital
RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute began construction this month on New Jersey’s first free-standing cancer hospital.

The Jack and Sheryl Morris Cancer Center will spare patients from having to journey out of state for care by providing diagnostic care including imaging, treatment, and follow-up exams in one space. The 12-story facility is estimated to cost $750 million, and it is being built in collaboration with the New Brunswick Development Corporation.

“Our new cancer center will have the latest and most advanced diagnostic imaging services including CT, PET, MR, 3D mammography, X-ray, ultrasound, interventional radiology, nuclear medicine, and echocardiogram, which will be utilized as part of our CardioOncology Program," Dr. Steven Libutti, director of Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and senior vice president of oncology services at RWJBarnabas Health, told HCB News. "These modalities will complement the sophisticated radiation therapy treatment options such as proton beam therapy, already available.”

Diagnostic equipment will be supplied by Siemens Healthineers, while Philips will provide solutions for interventional radiology, and ultrasound technology will come from Mindray. Clinicians will also be equipped to conduct stereotactic biopsies as part of its women’s imaging center.

The 510,000 square-foot building will care for inpatient, outpatient and ancillary services, as well as wellness and education resources, including offerings specifically tailored to cancer survivor needs.

The facility will be adjacent to the Rutgers Cancer Institute building, the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in New Jersey, and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. This will enable research faculty to use its state-of-the-art labs to teach students and physician-scientists to translate scientific findings directly to patients.

“As New Jersey’s first free-standing hospital dedicated solely to cancer, this state-of-the-art facility will provide patients with the most sophisticated cancer care including diagnostics, treatment, and ancillary services all under one roof. It will serve as a destination hub for outstanding specialized cancer care provided by internationally renowned oncologists,” said Libutti

The facility is named after Jack Morris, in recognition of his support and philanthropic work for New Brunswick development, and his wife, Sheryl.

It is expected to be completed in 2024.
