EBM Technologies brings PACS image viewing to iPad Pro at RSNA

by Gus Iversen , Editor in Chief
EBM Technologies demonstrated its mobile iPad Pro-based viewer Rad@ at RSNA, the first of its kind to be FDA approved for remote radiological image reading. Their sophisticated, vendor-neutral software allows radiologists to view images from any PACS/RIS system.

Combining vendor neutrality with a mobile reader literally untethers radiologists in two important new ways, allows for greater flexibility, work and financial efficiency.

"Migrating from remote reviewing to mobile device is already happening with clinicians but not remote diagnostic reading," William Pan, CEO of EBM told HCB News in September. "That is because by regulation, radiologists can only use FDA cleared devices to diagnose. There are many places radiologists wish they could do their diagnostic reading but are prohibited because of the absence of a PACS diagnostic workstation."

Rad@ is not intended to replace PACS diagnostic workstations permanently, but rather to enable radiologists to do their diagnostic reading at a place when there is no PACS diagnostic workstation available.

When asked why iPad was chosen, Pan pointed to the superior image quality on the devices as well as the limited number of sizes (as opposed to Android-based tablets which are more varied). Getting started with Rad@ is also a relatively simple process, according to Pan, involving connecting two iPads lightning-USB cable to a laptop’s USB ports.

"Rad@ runs independently in the background and has no interaction with other software," said Pan. "It works with any PACS and RIS software without interfering.
