Nuance at RSNA 2018

Nuance launches AI Marketplace expansion with 40+ AI radiology 'app developer' network

Nuance Communications reported several advancements at RSNA 2018 in an effort to connect disease-specific AI developers to its network of 70 percent of the radiologists at 5,500 healthcare facilities in North America.

This included the addition of 40 new apps in its AI Marketplace and the announcement of a new cloud-based version of its underlying PowerScribe One radiology reporting platform.

“We are especially focused on helping radiologists with the “last mile” of the workflow by getting the information they need through any of our AI apps into the report to ensure appropriate recommendations and workflow,” Karen Holzberger, vice president and general manager of diagnostics and healthcare for Nuance told HCB News.

One of the ultimate goals through improved reporting, according to Holzberger, is better exam follow-up compliance within 90 days to benefit patients. She also noted that a common AI platform could be of practical assistance to radiologists, such as managing the average 72 interruptions in workflow, per shift, that contribute to radiologist dissatisfaction and burnout.

Radiologist burnout, along with declining reimbursements and increasing workloads, are often cited by imaging sources as a strain on the specialty, including by speakers in the opening session on Sunday.

AI Marketplace app developers now working through Nuance include NVIDIA, Aidoc, Zebra Med, Aidence, and Densitas. Abdul Hamid Halabi, global business development lead for healthcare at NVIDIA told HCB News that the Nuance AI Marketplace allows disease-specific AI solutions to be developed into the radiologist’s workflow that are interoperative via the common PowerScribe One platform.

“Think of how GPS began, with each app running on its own platform,” Halabi told HCB News. “You could have one app running on your cell phone and another on your car. We can’t have that in imaging; it doesn’t serve radiologists very well.”

Nuance also is working with large academic medical centers to advance its common AI, disease-specific development platform. Its clinical AI Marketplace partners include Massachusetts’ General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the University of Pennsylvania, Baptist Health South Florida, and the University of Rochester.

The latest cloud-based version of PowerScribe offers several new AI features and enhancements to improve radiology workflow, according to Holzberger. These include advanced language understanding, image characterization, speech recognition, intelligent exchange of structured data, and cloud technology.

“PowerScribe One transforms my dictations on-the-fly into relevant, structured findings so that it’s not just my words, but their meaning in the context of my patient’s clinical situation. Then, by incorporating the data into the decision support workflow, I can become both more effective and more efficient,” said Dr. Tarik Alkasab, service chief for IT/Informatics and operations at Massachusetts General Hospital in a statement.

A few examples of support of radiology workflow include: the ability to extract structured data continuously while dictating; sharing clinically relevant structured data between systems – including EHRs and PACS; enabling care teams to improve follow-up, monitoring and outcomes; and the function of populating reports with content from integrated systems to minimize redundancy and reduce errors.
