Each month, we visit Dr. Blaufox’s Museum of Historical Medical Artifacts to take a look back at the medical equipment that cleared the way for what patients encounter in doctors’ offices and operating rooms of today.
Some equipment may be recognizable, while other featured inventions have since become obsolete or have had their usefulness discredited.

Tesla Coil in a black leatherette case with two associated glass applicators. The apparatus is housed in a black box measuring 12” x 6.5” x 2.5”. There are several glass vacuum tubes in the box. The Tesla coil produces a high voltage, low current discharge that ionizes the gas in the tubes. They glow blue and when held near the body, the tube emits sparks that jump the gap. This dramatic effect led to great acceptance and it was used commonly for home therapy of a variety of ills. Tesla played a role in numerous important inventions and was the “father of alternating current”.
