DOTmed: Please outline the scope of this project.
Day Kimball Healthcare (DKH) today announced that it will receive a grant from the State of Connecticut and has secured a favorable financing package, which will enable the company to proceed with the previously-announced renovations to the Day Kimball Hospital emergency department.

DKH had reported back in January that the emergency department project was in jeopardy of being delayed due to the state budget cuts to hospitals.

"Through the efforts of state Senate President Donald Williams, DKH will receive a $3.5 million state grant that will enable us to make infrastructure improvements necessary to support our much-needed hospital emergency department renovation project," said Robert E. Smanik, FACHE, DKH president and CEO.

"We are very appreciative of the Senator’s support of and interest in this critical effort, as the expansion and upgrading of our emergency department is an important part of an overall, systemic vision to continue to meet the healthcare needs of the people of Northeast Connecticut."

DOTmed: How will this project help the community you serve?
There are two important benefits that will result from the rebuilding of the emergency department: increased space and modernization, which features the critical component of 24 all-private treatment rooms that includes dedicated rooms specially designed for behavioral health patients, and one double-sized trauma room.

"The emergency department renovation effort – which also is being generously supported by local residents and businesses – is part of our strategic plan to continue to offer high-quality, integrated healthcare," concluded Smanik.
