HIMSS has introduced the eLearning Academy, a collection of healthcare information technology and management systems content delivered in the form of newly developed courses focused on the needs of the end-user, plus archived top-rated sessions from HIMSS events. The delivery platform, powered by Learn.com, is a Web-based, learning management system (LMS).

Accessible at www.himss.org/elearning, the site is available around the clock to meet the demands of busy healthcare professionals.

"We know that it is a challenge for some of our members, and other professionals in the industry, to expend the resources necessary to acquire new learning from face-to-face environments," said JoAnn Klinedinst, CPHIMS, PMP, FHIMSS, vice president, education, HIMSS. "Our members have also told us that, due to work or personal schedules, they value, and sometimes prefer, online learning. The eLA environment provides a robust educational platform so that participants can enhance their professional development in a flexible learning environment that offers a cost-effective alternative to off-site training."

The eLearning Academy focuses on healthcare IT content authored by HIMSS members mainly working in care delivery-focused settings. All courses and sessions have been approved by HIMSS for contact hours for continuing education credit toward the renewal of the CPHIMS, and any project management related courses qualify for category 4 PDUs for the project management professional (PMP) credential issued by the Project Management Institute. The material is presented in an AICC-compliant format, thereby allowing organizations with an existing LMS to create a dynamic link between HIMSS' eLA LearnCenter and the user's LMS.

With more than 190 education sessions and eight courses - plus six more courses scheduled for release in late 2009 - the eLA catalog covers a variety of topics, including sessions with excellent learner evaluations from HIMSS conferences, webinars and e-sessions, to the newly-updated Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS) Review Course, the introductory-focused HITS (Health Informatics Training System), an Overview of Information Technology in Healthcare, Project Management Essentials in Healthcare Informatics, Strategic IT Planning, and others. Examples of two courses are:

CPHIMS: The CPHIMS Review Course is a series of 10 modules (an introduction and nine topics) written by CPHIMS-certified professionals and leaders to help candidates prepare for the CPHIMS exam. The course provides an overview of the eligibility requirements and testing procedures, while offering a comprehensive overview of healthcare information and management systems today.

HITS Course: Developed in collaboration with the Irish Computing Society, the HITS course is an online learning resource for health IT that includes administrative and clinical best practices. In particular, HITS Level One Module (the course includes eight modules total) is designed to provide a basic understanding of a wide range of topics - from information technology and electronic record keeping to decision support systems and security. This entry-level course, suitable for non-healthcare professionals and those wanting to know more about healthcare IT, covers the health IT basics and is excellent preparation for the follow-up course, "Information Technology in Healthcare."
