Sutter Health, a not-for-profit servicing Medi-Cal patients in Northern California, has added five new radiation oncology centers to its network through a deal with GenesisCare.

The clinics are spread out along Central Coast, Central Valley, and Silicon Valley, and are located in Modesto, San Luis Obispo, Santa Cruz, Stockton, and Templeton. The majority of employees at each will transition to working under Sutter Health.

Additionally, Sutter Health plans to invest in adding new radiation oncology equipment and technologies and other patient care support services at the centers. Its decision to acquire the centers stemmed from a desire to provide treatment services close to its patients in the Northern San Joaquin Valley, reported The Modesto Bee.

“We know how important it is for specialty services like cancer care to be offered close to home so patients can stay on track with their treatments. Keeping continued cancer care accessible in these communities was a driving force for Sutter to acquire these care centers,” said Warner Thomas, president and CEO of Sutter Health, in a statement.

Sutter Health has been accredited by the American Society for Radiation Oncology and other national organizations. It is made up of medical groups, hospitals, surgery centers, urgent care clinics, and home health nurses that tend to 3.5 million patients.

GenesisCare will continue providing treatment services at the centers during a 90-day transition period. All will adopt Sutter Health’s clinical best practices and other cancer resources and technologies as part of the deal.

The sale comes just weeks after GenesisCare announced its emergence from Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which it filed for in June 2023. As part of its company restructuring, it separated its businesses into four distinct entities: a U.S. business, a business in Australia, one in the U.K., and one in Spain. Each will have its own funding and governance structures, including a separate Board of Directors, and will be responsible for its own strategy, business priorities, and performance.

It also sold its radiation oncology centers in Orange County to UCI Health in October.

Financial details were not disclosed.
