In the next six to seven years, Children’s Health and UT Southwestern Medical Center will open a new $5 billion pediatric health campus as a replacement for the existing Children’s Medical Center Dallas.

The two million-square-foot facility will span 33 acres and expand inpatient, surgical, and ambulatory capacity on the UT Southwestern campus with the addition of two 12-story towers and one eight-story tower. It will include 552 beds, a 38% increase, and 15% and 22% more space in the emergency department and operating rooms, respectively.

It also will have two helicopter pads, a level I pediatric trauma center, 90 ER exam rooms, and 24 observation rooms. Another 96 exam rooms will be added with a new outpatient clinic building to the 344 already in use at the Children’s Health Specialty Center Dallas outpatient facility.

“This new pediatric campus, a joint investment with UT Southwestern, enhances our shared capacity to provide comprehensive care for children, including those with the most complex medical and surgical needs,” said Christopher Durovich, president and chief executive officer of Children’s Health, in a statement.

Along with clinical care, the hospital will be a hub for innovation, academic research and training, and the development of lifesaving technologies. A new fetal care center will also be available for complex maternal and fetal healthcare needs, including fetal surgery at UTSW’s William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, which will be located across from the pediatric hospital and connected to it by a bridge to quickly and safely deliver babies to the Children’s Health Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU).

Based in Dallas, Children's Health has operated for over 100 years and today has more than 50 pediatric specialties to cater to the 288,085 patients it sees annually. It has partnered with UT Southwestern Medical Center for 60 years. Both will recruit leading pediatric clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, medical students, nurses, medical technology personnel, and other related health professions to work at the new hospital.

Children’s Health also has invested in other upcoming innovations to boost pediatric health access, including a new Plano hospital tower that will open in late 2024 and triple the number of beds available; the running of clinical programs on the second floor of the 150,000-square-foot UT Southwestern Medical Center at RedBird, a region of Dallas neighborhoods, in 2025; and the opening of new specialty centers and expansion of its primary care network.

UT Southwestern has over 80 specialties and sees more than 120,000 hospitalized patients, over 360,000 emergency room cases, and nearly 5 million outpatient visits a year.
