To better manage its growing patient population, Northwell Health, the largest provider in New York State, has tasked Philips with scaling up its patient monitoring capabilities over the next seven years, as well as improve data collection and interoperability.

During the pandemic, Northwell, which has a service area of 12 million people and cares for 2 million annually, was forced to convert convention centers, parking lots and other unconventional sites into ICUs to care for the surplus of patients coming through its doors. In an effort to avoid comparable situations in the future, it will use Philips vendor-agnostic patient monitoring platform and Software Evolution Services (SES) to capture clinical insights with AI and apply them to patient care and minimize manual tasks for clinicians and staff.

“With the new system, we wanted something that could leverage our existing IT infrastructure and allow Northwell to offer cybersecurity, while also building in redundancy with local availability,” said Phyllis McCready, vice president and chief procurement officer for Northwell Health, in a statement. "The new Philips system gives us an enterprise-wide platform that centralizes our patient monitoring and allows us to see what is happening at each bedside."

The system is made up of bedside and transport monitors, central stations and mobile applications, along with advanced clinical decision support tools and smart alarms that flag critical events early and capture and transmit data from monitors and devices to EMRs securely, from admission to discharge, even during transport.

Philips SES solution facilitates platform upgrades and includes cybersecurity measures to protect data, education and training for staff members, and a customer service manager for added support.

The platform will be used at Northwell’s 21 hospitals, including its flagship facilities, North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center; its 850 outpatient facilities; and within its residency program, one of the largest in the U.S. with more than 1,900 residents and fellows.
