Intelerad is adding cloud capabilities to its PACS system through its acquisition of Ambra Health
Intelerad Medical Systems has acquired Ambra Health, a developer of cloud-based medical image management software, in a deal that brings its value up to $1.7 billion.

Ambra’s cloud capabilities are expected to help enhance Intelerad’s portfolio and grow its reach in the global hospital imaging IT market, which has an estimated $4.5 billion value, according to the Signify Research Imaging IT World Report 2021.The two companies will also work together to provide distributed radiology reading and collaborative care solutions to help providers address diverse health concerns among different patient populations.

The deal brings together Intelerad’s IntelePACS system with Ambra’s cloud VNA, image exchange functionality and research and pathology capabilities. Both companies are also KLAS Research category leaders, says Mike Lipps, Intelerad chief executive officer. "The acquisition of Ambra is another proof point highlighting our continued investment in innovative cloud technology, similar to our active projects to deliver CloudDR and move IntelePACS and Clario services to the cloud. While many medical imaging vendors offer only a part of what providers need, we will now have the capability to offer the whole package," he told HCB News.

Under the deal, Morris Panner, CEO of Ambra, will become Intelerad’s president and report directly to Lipps. Intelerad’s IntelePACS is designed to integrate seamlessly with third-party HIS, RIS and EMR solutions. It preserves image and data quality with communications and compression technology. Among its features are its easy-to-use InteleViewer for digital imaging and communications and InteleConnect Clinical Hub, which allows for the quick delivery of results and reports to referring physicians.

Ambra’s cloud-based platform allows radiologists and other providers to share and view images in real time without a VPN or CD, as well as improve patient engagement and ensure the continuity of care and interoperability. Its Cloud VNA is designed to store DICOM and non-DICOM images side-by-side to give readers a holistic view of all patient imaging. It can archive and retrieve DICOM images for MR, CT, PET, CR, ultrasound and MG in JPEG, TIFF, PDF, DOC, DOCX and TXT formats. It also acts as a backup of secondary versions of medical images and priors, should primary data become unavailable.

“Ambra has been focused on ensuring large hospital systems, medical groups, imaging centers, clinical research organizations, and health information exchanges can rely on us to significantly improve processes and workflows in the circle of care,” said Panner in a statement. “This commitment is strengthened by joining Intelerad, and we look forward together to further enhance our products and services.”

The acquisition is the fourth for Intelerad this year. Just last month, it acquired Insignia, a U.K.-based healthcare IT company that manages over three billion images with its PACS and VNA technology. It is expected to help Intelerad address higher demand for diagnostic imaging as hospitals grapple with a growing, aging population and more diverse conditions on strained budgets. Intelerad also recently agreed to supply more than 1,300 members of Strategic Radiology with cloud-based medical image management systems for performance and workflow optimization.

"Partnering with Ambra is a significant milestone on our path to provide the most scalable and robust medical image management platform in the industry," said Lipps.
