MR and CT for radiotherapy were the big topics of conversation this weekend at the Royal Philips booth at the 2018 ASTRO Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas.

The Dutch healthcare giant unveiled its new Big Bore RT solution for CT, as well as its Ingenia Ambition and Elition MR-RT imaging systems, part of an MR-only simulation package.

“Current clinical practice is that patients undergo MR on top of CT, where CT gives density information and MR gives soft tissue contrast. This puts pressure on patient workflow and economics. This year, at ASTRO, we are announcing MR-only simulation for pelvis, which will allow our customers to rely solely on MR imaging following its clearance by the FDA,” said Marieke van Grootel, senior product marketing manager for MR Therapy, of the Ingenia Ambition and Elition MR-RT imaging systems to HCB News.

A dedicated oncology simulator, Big Bore RT enhances confident decision-making across all stages of scanning, planning and treatment through improved accuracy for lesion identification, tissue density calculation and segmentation. The system is equipped with new iterative model reconstruction (IMR) technology that reconstructs images with fine detail in less than three minutes, providing greater clinical accuracy in the detection and delineation of small, subtle structures, and better image quality with advanced auto-segmentation.

Alongside it at the show was the fully-digital Ingenia MR-RT platform, consisting of the Ingenia Elition 3.0T MR-RT and the Ambition X 1.5T MR-RT systems. Both utilize Compressed SENSE, an advanced acceleration application that reduces 2D and 3D scanning times by up to 50 percent.

Ingenia Ambition X is the first MR system designed with Philips’ BlueSeal magnet for helium-free operations. This frees the modality from the onset of a quenched magnet or the need of a vent pipe, making it 900 kg lighter than its predecessor and easier to install. Ingenia Elition, meanwhile, utilizes new high-performance gradients for fast diffusion scans with a high signal-to-noise ratio for improved tissue characterization and treatment response monitoring.

Also showcased was Pinnacle Evolution, a software solution that personalizes planning by integrating automated planning tools with Sun Nuclear’s PlanIQ software, improving treatment feasibility assessment and therapy planning workflow for patient-specific, high-quality therapy plans. It is built with proprietary intensity-modulated radiotherapy and volumetric modulated arc therapy optimization technology that replaces previous Pinnacle optimizers for greater performance speed with high plan quality.

In addition, the company plans to add dose verification technology designed by Lifeline Software Inc. to its portfolio, as part of a partnership announced at ASTRO. The technology offers fully automated independent dosimetric validation calculations for conventional, IMRT, and VMAT treatment planning, which includes the “Monte Carlo” dose calculation algorithm, known as the gold standard of dose calculation methods.
