Upgrading patient monitoring devices at Jackson Health System will now be the responsibility of Royal Philips, as part of a long-term strategic partnership between the two.

Based on an Enterprise Monitoring as a Service (EMaaS) model, the collaboration aims to install greater patient safety and continuous monitoring across the network at Jackson by standardizing monitoring at all acuity levels in each of its care settings, thereby assisting the Miami-Dade county provider in meeting the standards of the quadruple aim and providing value-based care to its patients.

“This will allow Jackson to provide a more seamless experience for patients and staff, deliver the right care at the right time and give them the flexibility to scale solutions when needed while only paying for what they use," Carla Kriwet, EVP of connected care and health informatics at Philips, told HCB News."

Traditional business models involve hospitals purchasing the rights to patient care monitoring systems, including the tasks of upgrading current and future hardware, software and networking solutions.

Under the Philips EMaaS model, the responsibility falls on the Dutch-based healthcare giant itself which will retain ownership of the model and provide technical support, continuing education, and asset and data management as part of its goal to improve three billion lives a year by 2025.

It also will work to identify and improve clinical workflow throughout Jackson’s facilities and design solutions that integrate with its core IT systems, including its electronic medical record.

Standardizing patient monitoring frees Jackson from up-front costs while providing it access to state-of-the-art monitoring platforms for a per-patient fee, including the Philips IntelliVue X3 patient monitor for easy smartphone style operation, mobility, and tracking of patient vitals during transport and at bedside; IntelliVue Guardian with Early Warning Scoring and IntelliVue Mobile Caregiver for organizing critical information in easy-to-use formats; and the Wearable Biosensor.

Flexibility to customize solutions to meet specific clinical needs will also be available to help in the transition toward a value-based care system, and to deliver on the quadruple aim.

“Much needed collaborative efforts required to co-create the solutions that will address healthcare's challenges are finally happening," Kriwet said. "Through these types of agreements, both Philips and their partners can take the long view, working with health systems to gain insight into the challenges that healthcare professionals face, including the workflows within the hospital and how to improve them, as well as establishing best practices, while working together to identify and fill solutions gaps.”

Jackson is one of many healthcare providers engaging in long-term strategic partnerships with Philips under the EMaaS model, with others being Augusta University Health, Westchester Medical Center Health Network, Mackenzie Health, Marin General Hospital, the Medical University of South Carolina Health, Banner Health, Bon Secours, Phoenix Children's Hospital, and Children's Hospital & Medical Center Omaha.

Affected facilities under this specific agreement include Jackson Memorial Hospital, Jackson South Medical Center, Jackson North Medical Center, Holtz Children's Hospital, Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital, Jackson Behavioral Health Hospital, a network of UHealth Jackson Urgent Care centers, multiple primary care and specialty care centers, and two long-term care nursing facilities.

Following its completion, the new Jackson West Medical Center campus in the City of Doral will also be included.
