Summer is almost upon us and that means it’s time for biomedical and clinical engineers, equipment technicians, hospital IT specialists and anyone else involved in the medical equipment industry to pack their bags for the AAMI Conference and Expo this June in beautiful Long Beach, CA.

During the conference, set to run June 1–4, thousands of members of the healthcare technology management (HTM) field and the wider healthcare technology community will gather to learn about the latest innovations and advances, get solutions to some of their toughest challenges, and connect with their peers.

“HTM professionals are constantly learning and adapting to changes in healthcare delivery and accreditation requirements, as well as changes to the technology and systems themselves,” said Sherrie Schulte, AAMI’s senior director of certification and the annual conference. “Attending continuing education programs, such as the AAMI Annual Conference, helps them stay on top of these changes, giving them a leg up in their careers.”

In the Expo Hall, more than 200 medical equipment manufacturers and service providers will be on hand to give attendees an up-close look at state-of-the-art technology and demonstrate cutting-edge medical equipment. Check out our AAMI Product Showcase (pg. 30) and AAMI Exhibitor Guide (pg. 34) for a quick run-down on some must-see companies and innovations at the show.

Education sessions during the conference will examine a wide variety of topics, such as cybersecurity, accreditation requirements, downtime planning for medical device systems, leveraging computerized maintenance management system data, life cycle management, human factors, artificial intelligence, procurement and standardization, maintenance strategies, and career development.

“The AAMI Annual Conference & Expo fosters an environment where sharing ideas, connecting with others, and learning are top priorities, giving attendees the tools and information they need to stay on top of the vast array of changes that are going on in the world of health technology,” said Robert Jensen, President and CEO of AAMI. For more of his top-level insights and perspectives, see the exclusive interview he conducted with Health- Care Business News on page 26.

Finally, AAMI 2018 promises to offer some exceptionally inspiring and insightful presentations from a wide range of featured speakers. In one session, members of the HTM community will have the opportunity to get to know Kenneth Monroe, senior associate director in The Joint Commission’s Standards Interpretation Group’s department of engineering, who was named the successor to George Mills in late December 2017, and take home some important updates from the accreditation body.

In another session, motivational speaker Christine Cashen will provide tips to help attendees communicate more effectively, handle conflict like a pro, create a better day with more energy, and use humor to increase job satisfaction, improve morale, and reduce stress.

Finally, be sure to check out Aron Ralston, fearless adventurer and subject of the film 127 Hours, which depicts his harrowing ordeal trapped inside a Utah canyon.

He will reflect on his remarkable triumph over insurmountable odds and share the lessons he’s learned about the importance of examining one’s priorities and outlook on life.

With so much to see and do, the 2018 AAMI Conference and Expo promises to be one for the history books. Make the most of it – and don’t forget to pack sunscreen.
