by Sean Ruck, Contributing Editor | February 15, 2016
Frank Molinaro
From the January/February 2016 issue of HealthCare Business News magazine

For this issue’s installment of Hospital Spotlight, HealthCare Business News spoke with Frank Molinaro, CEO of Abrazo Arrowhead Campus and its satellite, Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital. Molinaro provided some background on his experience as well as news of note from the two facilities he heads.

HCB News: How did you get involved in health care?
FM:
I liked science in high school and it seemed like medical technology used a lot of science, and it seemed like a good role to move into. I was a medical technologist, a phlebotomist, then went back to get my MBA.

HCB News: How did you get involved with Abrazo Arrowhead Campus?
FM:
I had been with Vanguard for about seven years, working at Weiss Memorial in Chicago. Vanguard also owned the hospitals at Abrazo and asked me to consider.

HCB News: How long have you been CEO?
FM:
I’ve been at Arrowhead for five years. Arrowhead was purchased by Tenet Healthcare two years ago.

HCB News: What kind of changes occurred after the purchase?
FM:
For me, it’s been a dramatic, positive change with Tenant purchasing. They have invested millions in IT. The planning is long-term and there’s a greater strategic focus on population health. Tenant has been very supportive, and the vision they’ve put forward promising.

HCB News: I understand professionals at your facilities get to work with some fairly rare technology. For instance, how long have you had the da Vinci Surgical Robot?
FM:
We acquired the da Vinci around 2012. We actually have two. We had some very progressive physicians on the general side and they’ve moved things forward. We’re now an epicenter for the da Vinci system, with people traveling from all over the country to see the applications.

HCB News: Are there any recent developments you’d like to highlight?
FM:
I think another, aside from the da Vinci, that’s important to note is that we also were the first and only hospital in the state to offer the Mazor robotics system for spine surgery. We’re also proud of our joint program, becoming one of the larger programs in the state over the span of just one year.

HCB News: How has staffing been? Are you finding any areas just don’t have enough people entering the field?
FM:
Arizona’s a great place to live, so the talent pool is pretty strong. There are always a few areas you can never have enough of — particularly in the high-tech areas. But we have enjoyed a high level of talent that has been here a long time. They create a very strong culture. We work hard to retain them.

HCB News: What are the biggest challenges your facilities face?
