Medical societies identify more unnecessary tests

by Carol Ko, Staff Writer | August 15, 2013
A group of leading medical societies are set to release more than 30 new lists of commonly ordered but often unnecessary procedures that could cause harm, according to the ABIM Foundation.

The lists are part of the Choosing Wisely campaign, made up of national physician groups that develop five evidence-based lists of tests that are overused in specific fields. This year marks the third wave of lists since April 2012, when the campaign was first launched.

The lists address an ongoing conversation around waste and unnecessary testing in the U.S. health care system and were developed by specialty societies using current clinical evidence.

Dr. Michael L. Steinberg, chairman of ASTRO's board of directors, will be announcing the American Society of Radiation Oncology's list of five procedures at its 2013 Annual Meeting, on Monday, September 23.

"We try to focus on things that have the most impact — even if it's not the most expensive test," Dr. Debra Monticciolo, chair of the American College of Radiology Quality and Safety Commission, and co-chair of the ACR Choosing Wisely Committee, told DOTmed News.

Medical tests

August 15, 2013 08:34

STudies in Europe have shown a 40% decrease in medical tests when Intensive Care units have Intensivists.

We really need to look at this for any facility with more than 20 ICU beds. Not only are the number of useless tests decreased, but the gross abuse of "specialist" consultations goes down as well.

True reform of the healthcare crisis will require reform of the delivery system, not just the insurance system. We can do this and I've been talking about this for a decade or more.
