The Food and Drug Administration cleared one of the widest bore 1.5 Tesla MRIs on the market.

Hitachi Medical Systems America Inc. said Tuesday its new Echelon Oval 1.5T MRI received FDA's OK. For those keeping score at home, its 74-centimeter oval bore is among the widest in the industry, with most wide-bore MRIs boasting 70-centimeter openings.

The somewhat roomier fit is meant to make it easier for claustrophobic or heavier patients to have access to the device.

"With the evolving changes in health care delivery putting ever more emphasis on patient comfort and satisfaction, Echelon Oval re-shapes expectations for MR imaging," Sheldon Schaffer, vice president and general manager of MR and CT for Hitachi, said in a statement.
