Special report: X-ray tubes hold steady

X-ray tubes will advance, but image intensifiers’ days are numbered
“The X-ray tube, I think it’s going to be around for a very long time,” says Ferguson, who foresees that future tubes will move toward better power and heat management.

“The application of Anode End Grounded X-ray tube technology to diagnostic imaging systems will revolutionize diagnostic imaging equipment, as it already has with CT,” predicts Hurlock. “A smaller and lighter X-ray tube used with a digital flat panel detector will enable manufacturers to put high power and high quality imaging where it wouldn’t fit before.”

As for image intensifiers, Ferguson predicts prices will decrease for a while as new technology is introduced. “They’ll need to be able to compete both on image quality and dose with some of these new detectors that are coming out,” he says. “In the long term, they’ll be replaced by flat panel detectors.”

Although flat panel detectors are certainly gaining strength in the sector, it is unclear exactly when the time will come that they will lead to the ultimate demise of image intensifiers. “Unless our economy picks up, I don’t see those digital systems taking a large percentage of the market for several years,” says Ruth.
