The second is more specific to nuclear medicine. The public is becoming very concerned about radiation exposure related to medical imaging.
To address the public’s concern, there’s a two-fold solution. Recommendations need to be put in place to ensure radiation exposure is as low as possible, while still providing the imaging quality needed. The public also needs to be educated about the relatively low risk of radiation exposure compared to the risk of not diagnosing or not treating appropriately a disease they might have.
DMBN: Are there any big announcements coming from SNM this year?

Delbeke: Absolutely. Five years ago SNM started a molecular imaging campaign under the leadership of Peter Conti, then SNM president. With the funds raised – from industry and membership, SNM was able to move forward a number of initiatives At this year’s SNM Annual Meeting held in San Antonio, Texas on June 4-8, 2011, SNM will celebrate the end of the molecular imaging campaign. I have the privilege to summarize its accomplishments and thank the donors, both individuals through the SNM Educational and Research Foundation and corporate sponsors. As the results of their sponsorship, SNM has now integrated fully molecular imaging throughout its programs.

DMBN: Would you consider the announcement of those initiatives your proudest moment as SNM president?

Delbeke: There’s no particular moment, but I have really enjoyed the privilege of serving the membership and bringing people together to accomplish these initiatives. I’ve also enjoyed building the bridges for collaborations and contributions to particular goals.
