The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine said Wednesday Dr. Alfred Z. Abuhamad is its new president.

Abuhamad is currently a professor and chair of the department of obstetrics and gynecology, an associate dean for clinical affairs and a professor of radiology at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Va.

"It is with great privilege and honor that I assume the presidency of the AIUM, an outstanding organization dedicated to advancing the safe and effective use of ultrasound in medicine," Abuhamad said in prepared remarks.

Abuhamad has been involved with AIUM for 20 years, holding elected positions on the AIUM Board of Governors and the Executive Committee. He also served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine.

He received his medical degree at the American University of Beirut and completed postgraduate work at the University of Miami. Abuhamad also completed a fellowship at Yale Medical School in Ultrasound and Prenatal Diagnosis.

As AIUM's president, Abuhamad will lead more than 8,900 members, including doctors, sonographers and scientists.

"It is a remarkable time to lead this organization and follow the path set by past presidents," Abuhamad said. "I am really excited about this opportunity and look forward to collaborating with various organizations in order to further the AIUM mission."
