The 11th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Breast Surgeons this April is set to be even bigger and better than in years past. The society considers itself the chief leadership organizations for surgeons who specialize in breast disease treatment, and according to its web site, the annual meeting is the only conference where national and international surgeons can come together to learn about the latest in breast surgical care.

The expected turnout for the five-day event is about 1,200 people, nearly a 10 percent increase from last year, which will be a "record turnout," according to the society. The annual meeting will feature a wide array of exhibits that showcase the latest technology and procedures, educational courses and workshops and general session presentations.

This year's keynote address, entitled "A Decade of Leadership of the American College of Surgeons - Valuable Lessons Learned," will feature Thomas Russell, executive director of the American College of Surgeons.

The annual meeting focuses on recent advances in breast cancer research. This year, focus will be on techniques and radiation, which are moving forward when it comes to personalized cancer therapy. The organization has put together a program of courses and meetings that center on these new developments, including controversies in breast surgery and advanced breast imaging and technologies for diagnosis and therapy in breast cancer management.

Research presentations include new information on breast cancer risk in obese women and a study that found breast surgeons with special training in reading mammograms are as equally skilled at the task as radiologists with special training. Both groups were found to be more skilled than radiologists who lack special training.

The meeting will take place at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, Nev. from April 28 to May 2.
