FDA clears GE's mobile angio system

GE Healthcare said its mobile angiography system, the Discovery IGS 740, will now be available to U.S. customers.
The system was featured at GE Healthcare's booth at RSNA 2013 but didn't receive clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration until Wednesday.
Called a "rail-free mobile angiography system", the Discovery IGS 740 is designed to give clinical teams plenty of flexibility in the interventional suite since there are no fixed ceiling-mounted rails with the system.
"By eliminating the ceiling rails, installation is simplified for flexibility in designing the room and positioning ceiling-mounted ancillaries (monitors, radshields, lights) where health care professionals need them," said press material from GE.
In addition, a rotating laser continuously scans the room so the system knows where it is at all times.
"Our goal is to pioneer a solution designed to free interventional radiologists from traditional constraints," said Chantal Le Chat, general manager of GE Healthcare Premium Angiography. "With the enhanced mobility of the Discovery IGS 740, clinicians have full freedom to operate, and we believe this can revolutionize the field of interventional imaging."
