Siemens Continues to Gain Momentum in Community Hospitals

February 17, 2012
Malvern, Pa., -- Today, Siemens Healthcare announced that the company is continuing its strong momentum with additional community-hospital purchases of the Soarian® enterprise health information system. Across the country, these healthcare providers are turning to Siemens and Soarian to help them connect people to connect care for their communities. Siemens can deliver an enterprise-wide health information technology (IT) solution for community hospitals that has the potential for agile implementation, improved caregiver affinity through advanced IT solutions and embedded workflow management, plus tools to remotely manage all aspects of hardware and implementation through Siemens secure, medical-grade cloud. These capabilities work to speed the time to value of health IT as Siemens partners with the customers to achieve their broad organizational goals, which are key goals of Agenda 2013, a global initiative of the Siemens Healthcare Sector to increase competitiveness and expand in emerging markets.

Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (HHSC), Honolulu, recently finalized a contract to implement a full Soarian suite of clinical and financial applications across 10 public hospitals. The dynamic and seamless exchange of patient information will support enhanced care continuity and quality on the Hawaiian Islands. The full Soarian enterprise suite including Soarian Clinicals and Soarian Financials will be implemented in the West Hawaii, Maui, Oahu and Kauai Regions of HHSC.

"Our top priority is the delivery of quality health care to the island communities and we found a partner in Siemens who could help us increase our ability to deliver on this commitment," said Bruce S. Anderson, PhD, president and CEO, of HHSC. "We identified a coordinated electronic health record as a significant need for our providers and we look forward to establishing a long term relationship with Siemens to exceed our goals."

HHSC is the fourth largest public health system in the country and the largest provider of healthcare in the Islands. HHSC provides a range of services, including emergency, specialized disease management, primary care, rural care, long-term care, home health and adult day-health - all of which improve the health of individuals and promote the economic health of the island communities throughout the state of Hawaii.

T.J. Samson Community Hospital, is a 175-bed hospital in Glasgow, Ky., that recently signed an agreement with Siemens to utilize Soarian Clinicals and Soarian Financials, along with Soarian Electronic Document Management/Health Information Management (EDM/HIM), Soarian Quality Reporting Service, and ePrescribing. These solutions will serve as an electronic foundation for a new stage of hospital expansion. During the next five years, administration at T.J. Samson expect to add more physicians who will be working in a new healthcare pavilion set to open in January 2013.

The hospital was looking for a solution that would provide workflow technology to help streamline the patient care process across the enterprise, including physician offices, outpatient and inpatient settings. The deal builds on previously installed Siemens components such as Siemens Pharmacy/Med Administration Check™ (MAK), NOVIUS® Lab, and syngo® Workflow. T.J. Samson will also completely automate the health IT solution in Siemens private, medical-grade cloud. They will tap Siemens to completely manage all aspects of the deployment through the company's Managed Services IT Outsourcing business.

"Our health system is exploring new opportunities to improve the way we deliver care to the people of Glasgow, Kentucky, which includes a combination of architectural and service-line redesign," said Bill Kindred, CEO, T.J. Samson Community Hospital. "This redesign is expected to help us improve the patient experience because our new pavilion will provide a holistic approach to care. We expect to have a similar experience with our EHR rollout. Siemens is a partner who has the agility and expertise to ensure that our health IT is well-managed, which allows us to keep our focus on helping physicians adopt these technologies and ensuring that they are doing so in a meaningful way that provides the greatest patient benefit."

Finally, two Missouri hospitals that would ordinarily find themselves in a competitive position have recently connected to deliver a coordinated electronic health record solution to area providers. Recognizing the value of migrating to enterprise health IT, Southeast Hospital, Cape Girardeau, Mo., a 280-bed acute-care facility that is part of Southeast HEALTH, and Missouri Delta Medical Center, a 162-bed not-for-profit corporation based in Sikeston, Mo., recently purchased a Soarian enterprise suite including Soarian Clinicals, Soarian EDM/HIM, Siemens Pharmacy, MAK, NOVIUS Lab, Soarian Quality Measures and syngo Workflow.

"This move may be perceived as unconventional by some, but we believe that it supports our goal of providing competent, compassionate and cost efficient care, in a way that promotes sustainable growth for the medical center and affordable care for patients," said Jason Schrumpf, CEO, Missouri Delta Medical Center. "We were engaged in a lengthy investigation of four EHR systems, and Siemens Soarian became the right solution for this endeavor because of the strength of its clinical offering, aggressive implementation timeline and Siemens collaborative pricing structure."

The Siemens health IT offerings will be hosted out of a data center that has been opened in the Cape Girardeau area and that will be known as Servir LLC. It will house information technology that will be used by both hospitals, and by physicians and clinics in the region.

"After an extensive vendor evaluation process our team concluded that Siemens Soarian was at least three years ahead of other systems we reviewed and this proved important as we were looking to implement a system that was going to meet the long term needs of the providers in our area," said Hugh King, vice president, regional system and CFO, Southeast HEALTH. "The nurses liked Soarian and the physicians loved it. After the extremely positive feedback from our clinical evaluators, Siemens further met our needs with a very competitive pricing offer. Soarian was the clear solution for our IT challenges."

Southeast Hospital maintains an organizational commitment to patient satisfaction and administration plans to use Soarian with its advanced clinical workflow capabilities to increase physician and nursing utilization of health IT.
